Intro Metalworking Class for Teens (Ages 14–18): Cold Connections & Metal Techniques
Course Title: Creative Metalworking: Cold Connections and Craftsmanship
Time: Monday - Friday 9:00am -12:00pm
Description:
This hands-on week long metalworking class is designed specifically for teens aged 14 to 18 who are interested in learning the fundamentals of working with metals like copper, brass, and aluminum. Students will explore key techniques including cold connections (such as riveting and tab setting), sawing, and filing — all without the need for soldering or high heat.
Through engaging projects, participants will gain confidence using hand tools to shape and join metal, develop design skills, and create their own custom pieces such as pendants, keychains, tags, or small sculptures. Emphasis is placed on safe workshop practices, creative problem-solving, and developing fine motor skills.
Skills Students Will Learn:
- How to safely use a jeweler’s saw to cut metal shapes
- Filing and finishing techniques for smooth edges and textures
- Cold connection methods such as riveting and fold-forming
- Basic design principles for metal projects
- Proper handling of copper, brass, and aluminum
No prior experience is necessary. All tools and materials are provided. This course is ideal for creative teens interested in art, design, or hands-on making.
Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will have a foundational understanding of cold metalworking techniques and will leave with several finished pieces and the skills to keep exploring metal art.
