Papermaking with Natural Fibers
$ 150 usd
Fri, Jun 20, 2025, 5:30 – 7:30 PM EDT
Liberty Arts Studio, 918 Pearl St., Durham, NC, United States Map

Discover the art of traditional papermaking using a unique hybrid method inspired by both Japanese and Hawaiian techniques—and take home your very own handmade paper.
Students will work with wauke (Hawaiian paper mulberry) that has already been stripped, retted, and cooked. You'll prepare the fibers using a Hawaiian-style mallet to beat them into pulp—a great way to release some stress! Students will learn how to create their own pulp baths, formation aids, and paper.
Due to time constraints, your paper will need to finish drying at home. The instructor will provide “to-go containers” so you can transport your work safely.
Please Note:
- Material fee of $15 due at beginning of class
- Papermaking is a wet process-- dress appropriately and wear nonslip shoes.
- The process involves a lot of standing—wear comfortable shoes.
- Liberty Arts is a creative co-op home to metal artists, woodworkers, glassblowers, and painters. The studio may occasionally be hot and loud.
- Inform the instructor of any allergies or skin sensitivities. Papermaking involves plant-based fibers and organic solutions.
