Introduction to Metal Casting Aluminium: Bull Heads

In this class, students will be guided through the metal casting process, from pattern making to the final cast piece. Each student will receive assistance in constructing and assembling an original bull’s head sculpture using styrofoam and clay. The finished metal casting will be designed to hang on a wall.

The class consists of 15 hours of studio and foundry time spread over 5 days. (March 5th,12,19,26, April 2 2025) during this time students will learn:

  • The fundamentals of pattern making using styrofoam and clay
  • Techniques for assembling and refining their bull’s head sculpture
  • The process of mold preparation and gating for metal casting
  • Safety protocols and best practices in a foundry setting
  • How to pour and finish their metal casting, including grinding and patination techniques

By the end of the course, each student will have a completed, wall-mounted metal bull’s head sculpture to take home. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and create!

This class does not require any prior experience with metal casting or mold making but does require the ability to work around high temperatures, loud noises, sharp edges, and power tools. Protective gloves, face shields, dust mask and ear plugs will be provided; students should arrive wearing non-synthetic long sleeve clothing . Closed toe shoes are required to enter the foundry. In the interest of safety, the instructor reserves the option to deny students from participating in some class activities in the event they are not wearing appropriate clothing.
