Learn how to cast bronze! This five-session (10 hour) evening class walks students through creating an oil-clay pattern, packing it in sand; casting it in bronze; and finishing the piece with patinas.

Students will create their own beautiful, bronze contemplation bowls - which ring with a satisfying bell tone. In the first class (at Liberty Arts Studios, 918 Pearl St.) students will create an oil-clay version of their bowl - or, the ‘pattern.’

Following classes will be held in Liberty Art’s foundry at Watts-Hill Pavilion in Durham Central Park. We will pack our patterns into sand molds; and cast the bowls in molten bronze. As a final step, excess metal will be trimmed and we will patina the bowls using a propane torch and several chemicals, resulting in different colors of patina.

Liberty Arts will provide safety glasses, gloves and leather protective gear. Students will need long, durable pants for the foundry, and provide their own closed-toed leather boots. We strongly recommend students invest in a reusable particle mask or rebreather - although we have disposable dust masks available.
