Come spend a day at Liberty Arts making your very own briar pipe!

Getting Started
This class is taught by local Artisan Pipe Maker David S. Huber of DSH Pipes and is sponsored by Vermont Freehand and Briar Works, USA. The workshop will focus on the process of pipe making from start to finish including tons of hands on experience with common tools of the trade, including a high grade sand blasting system. You will receive instruction and guidance from David every step of the way and will leave the workshop with a pipe of your own creation!

On the day of the class, we’ll all be creating our very own pipe from a pre-drilled stummel with a pre-formed stem.
In order to maximize our time in the shop, I recommend doing a little sketching before you arrive so you have some idea about what you’d like to make.

Below is a photo of one of the stummels. They are not all drilled exactly the same, so be ready to adjust your design to the block you get.

Safety Tips
We will be working with machinery that spins and grinds, throwing chips and making lots of dust!
As exciting as that is, we take safety very seriously and recognize that our tools can easily grab us or grind us, breaking bones and tearing flesh. Sound gruesome? It can be.
You can do a few simple things that will help to minimize the possibility of injuring yourself.

  1. Respect the tool.
  2. Don’t wear any hanging jewelry. That includes wrist bands and neck ties.
  3. Avoid loose fitting clothing.
  4. Tie up any long hair.
  5. Wear closed toed shoes.

In the event that something does go wrong and someone gets hurt, we do have a minimal first aid kit on hand for small injuries.

You will be provided with

  1. A dust and particle mask
  2. Eye protection

It is our goal to have zero injuries!

IMPORTANT!

  1. This workshop is designed with minimal stem work in mind. You are welcome to alter the shape of your stem if you would like, but we cannot guarantee that you will finish your pipe on the day of the workshop if you do.
  2. The liability waiver form must be signed and turned in before you will be allowed to use any tools in the shop. Please print it and bring it with you on the day of the workshop.
  3. Your Liability Waiver and Consent Form releases Liberty Arts, David Huber, DSH Pipes, and John Inge from any responsibility in case you are injured.
  4. Liberty Arts has safety procedures and rules, which you will been provided with and will be expected to abide by.
  5. Please be on time. We have a lot to accomplish and while everyone should be able to complete a sandblasted pipe by the end of the workshop on Friday, it is important that we stay on schedule.
